Sergei Rachmaninov's 2nd piano concerto, 2nd movement, the Adagio Sostenuto, played by Helene Grimaud. There is a moving story behind this beautiful music. Rachmaninov's 1rst piano concerto had been a disaster due to a poorly rehearsed orchestra and an incompetent conductor. The critics were merciless with the composer. One said that this was music for the entrance to hell. Rachmaninov lost all confidence in his ability, and fell into a deep depression. He seeked help from a therapist named Dr. Dahl who helped restore his faith in himself. Finally, out of the depression, Rachmaninov felt a burst of creativity and composed this masterpiece, which he dedicated to his friend Dr. Dahl. It is in my humble opinion, the most beautiful of all piano concertos. Hope you enjoy it as much as I always do. Gabe Meruelo.
