Dialogues Des Carmelites (final scene / Salve Regina) F. Poulenc

  1. Dialogue of the Carmelites, by Francis Poulenc, based on a play of the same name by George Bernano. This three act opera is based on a historical event during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution, when a group of Carmelite nuns were told to renounce their Christian faith or die in the guillotine. They chose to die. The leaders of the radicals in power who were guilty of thousands of deaths at the guillotine, Robespierre, Danton, and Marat die d themselves violently(two of them at the guillotine, the other one killed by the widow of one of his victims) as the people finally had enough. Napoleon ended up restoring order at the end, although he was himself also responsible for a generation of young men killed in the battlefields of Europe where he conquered his glory. Gabe Meruelo.
