L'Ascencion, by Olivier Messaien. The composer was, like J.S. Bach a commited Christian, in his case a catholic (Bach was a Lutheran protestant,) and frequently his music is about God, his creation, his work and his participation in man's affairs. Like several other Christian composers, he was also an organist (Bach, Bruckner, Franck, to name a few. Donald J. Grout says that: "Messaien's music from the beginning is a complete integration of wide-ranging emotional expressiveness, deeply religious in tone, with minutely organized means of intellectual control. To these he brings continuous discoveries of new sounds, new rhythms and harmonies, and new modes of relation between music and life-life in both the natural and the spiritual (supernatural) realms, which Messiaen views as wholly continuous or interlocked. His musical language shows traits of such diverse ancestors as Debussy, Scriabin, Wagner, Rimsky-Korsakov, Monteverdi, Josquin, and Perotin. In addition, he is a poet (writing his own texts for foval works), a student of Greek poetry , and an accomplished amateur ornithologist." He was very influential with many young composers, including Pierre Boulez, Karheiz Stockhaussen, Luigi Nono, and ton de Leeuw, among many other important compsers of that generation. Gabe Meruelo.
