Vivaldi - Gloria

  1. "Gloria," by Antonio Vivaldi; Concerto Italiano, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Sara Mingarde; a production of Philippe Beziat. This production captures the ecclesiastical feeling and circumstances under which this composition must have been created by Vivaldi, who was a priest and musical director of a major catholic church in eighteenth century Italy. 2. Vivaldi was called "il prete rosso," (the red priest) because of his red hair. He was a man of prodigious output. Like his contemporary, Johann Sebastian Bach, he could compose music almost as fast as it could be copied. Indeed, over the period of his active musical career, he composed 49 operas, over 450 concertos, 23 symnphonies, 75 sonatas and cantatas, plus numerous motets and oratorios. He's said to have completed the opera Tito Manlio in five days. All of this in addition to fulfilling his duties as director of a girl's choir and conductor, teacher, and general superintenedent of music at the conservatory of the Pieta in Venice.
