Dietrich Buxtehude (ca. 1637-1707) was one of Germany's principal Lutheran's composers. He had considerable influence over young Johann Sebastian Bach, who on one occasion traveled over 150 miles on foot to watch him perform, and remained for days, actually overstaying his allowed leave of absence from his job, in order to absorb as much knowledge as possible from the brilliant organist and composer.
